Mycobactériologie - Centre Pasteur du Cameroun

Mycobacteriology Laboratory

Presentation :

The Mycobacteriology Service is a reference Centre of Excellence, accredited ISO 15189, specializing in the fight against mycobacteriosis. With a state-of-the-art technical platform and a highly qualified team, the laboratory is committed to providing accurate and rapid diagnoses for tuberculosis, leprosy, Buruli ulcer and atypical mycobacteria. Our mission extends beyond routine diagnosis to include research and innovation as well as training, thus actively contributing to the improvement of public health in Cameroon and the sub-region.

Main activities:

  • Bacteriological diagnosis of tuberculosis, leprosy, Buruli ulcer and atypical mycobacteria.
  • Determination of antibiotic susceptibility profiles and detection of resistance genes.
  • Molecular identification of mycobacteria.
  • Operational and fundamental research on drug resistance mechanisms, mycobacterial transmission dynamics, and the development of new diagnostic tools

Services:

Our laboratory offers a full range of advanced diagnostic services:

  • Tuberculosis Diagnosis: We offer an integrated diagnostic approach, ranging from conventional methods to the fastest molecular technologies.
  • Conventional Methods: Microscopy (Ziehl-Neelsen, Auramine), culture on liquid (MGIT) and solid (Lowenstein-Jensen) media, identification and phenotypic antibiogram.
  • Rapid Molecular Methods: Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and antibiotic resistance via TB-LAMP, GeneXpert (detection of M. tuberculosis and resistance to Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Fluoroquinolones, Aminoglycosides, and Ethionamide) and Line Probe Assay (detection of M. tuberculosis and resistance to Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Fluoroquinolones, Aminoglycosides).
  • Types of samples: Analysis of all types of samples: sputum and other pulmonary samples, pus, aspiration fluids, stools, biopsies, bone marrow, etc.
  • Diagnosis of Buruli Ulcer: Microscopy, culture and molecular detection of Mycobacterium ulcerans DNA.
  • Leprosy diagnosis: AFB smear detection and molecular detection of Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis DNA and drug resistance
  • External Quality Control: Design and implementation of quality control panels for microscopy, TB-LAMP and GeneXpert.

Main equipment:

Our technical platform includes, among other things, optical and fluorescence microscopes, BACTEC MGIT 960 automated systems, GeneXpert (6 and 10 colors) with 4 and 16 modules, TB-LAMP, thermocyclers, BSL3 containment laboratory, guaranteeing maximum safety for the handling of level 3 pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
