The Mycobacteriology Service of the Pasteur Center of Cameroon (CPC) welcomed, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, a delegation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of a mission to evaluate the quality of tuberculosis diagnosis carried out within the institution.
Led by Charles I. Okello, Director of Programs at the CDC, the delegation also included Sean R. Toney as well as Dr. Wawo from the Hippodrome Medical Center. The visit aimed to examine the procedures implemented for the analysis of sputum samples used in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The experts notably reviewed the laboratory’s working methods in order to assess their compliance with the standards and recommendations applied in the medical examinations required for visa applicants to the United States.
At the end of this visit, Charles I. Okello did not hide his appreciation for the quality of the work carried out within the department. “I am impressed by what I have seen and heard today at the Mycobacteriology Service of the Pasteur Center of Cameroon,” he declared.
A positive evaluation of the quality of the analyses carried out in this unit would constitute a major asset for the CPC. It could notably pave the way for the future reception of samples from other partner countries of the CDC within the framework of health examinations for migrants.
Beyond its technical aspect, this mission is part of a broader dynamic of scientific exchanges and the strengthening of institutional collaboration between partners. It also contributes to consolidating national capacities and supporting the continuous improvement of the quality of tuberculosis diagnostic services in Cameroon.
