Climate-sensitive diseases: the Centre Pasteur of Cameroon strengthens monitoring with PLaCARD, an innovative digital platform for surveillance and prediction

The Centre Pasteur of Cameroon (CPC) organized a small workshop on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in Yaoundé, focused on co-developing the multisectoral PLaCARD (Platform for Collecting, Analysing and Reporting Data) protocol, an innovative digital platform dedicated to monitoring and predicting climate-sensitive diseases such as malaria and cholera. Developed as part of the Climate and Health project, funded by the Cooperation and Cultural Action Service (SCAC) of the French Embassy, this initiative aims to strengthen national capacities for anticipating and responding to health risks intensified by climate change.

The workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Public Health, the National Malaria Control Program, the National Meteorology Directorate, the National Observatory on Climate Change, the Ministry of Environment, as well as the CPC’s internal experts involved in developing and implementing the platform.

In his opening speech, CPC General Manager Dr. Mirdad Kazanji highlighted the strategic importance of this approach in a context marked by increasingly intense climate events and their growing impacts on public health. Participants got a chance to explore the features of PLaCARD, discuss the platform’s governance mechanisms, and figure out how to gradually integrate it into national surveillance systems, including the District Health Information Software2 (DHIS2).

The work has made it possible to make significant progress on the structure of the multisectoral protocol and to identify the key elements needed to finalize it. A coordinated roadmap will be drawn up to continue the work and ensure the sustainable integration of this tool into the national health surveillance system.
