HIV/AIDS surveillance activities
The CPC houses the National Reference Laboratory for HIV viral load determination. The laboratory processed 21,392 HIV VL requests in 2023 compared to 24,313 in 2022, a decrease of 12.01%. Our expertise is used in HIV input quantification committees and all other issues related to HIV VL testing. The CPC is responsible for distributing reagents to other sites.
CAMPHIA « Cameroon Population-Based HIV Impact Assessement»
The Centre Pasteur du Cameroun (CPC) was selected as the Central Laboratory for the CAMPHIA (Cameroon Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment) survey after a rigorous evaluation of Cameroon's reference laboratories by ICAP and CDC, the MSP's partners in this survey. The CPC performs HIV viral load tests for early diagnosis of HIV infection and confirms positive hepatitis B results obtained in the field. The CPC also oversees activities conducted in the survey's twelve satellite laboratories.
The CAMPHIA project, funded by the U.S. government and led by the Ministry of Health of Cameroon in collaboration with U.S. partners (ICAP, CDC, and Westat) and national agencies (CPC, CNLS, INS, CREMER, LNSP), aims to assess the impact of HIV on households in Cameroon. The CAMPHIA survey also aims to evaluate the impact of health interventions in the fight against HIV among adults and children. This survey, which began in April 2017 among approximately 14,000 households, is expected to target approximately 26,500 adults aged 15-64 and 7,000 children aged 0-14.
Research Objectives:
Estimate HIV prevalence in CameroonEstimate national HIV incidence
Estimate HIV viral load suppression
Estimate the prevalence of HIV/HBV coinfection
Estimate the prevalence of primary and transmitted HIV resistance
Estimate CD4+ cell distribution and HIV-related risk behaviors
Status of Progress
As of May 2018, 1,182 HIV viral load tests, 49 early childhood diagnoses, and 1,762 hepatitis B viral load tests were performed at the CPC. The incidence test will be carried out at the end of the field sample collection.
