Measles/Rubella - Centre Pasteur du Cameroun

Measles/Rubella Surveillance Activities

As the WHO National Reference Laboratory for measles and rubella, the CPC is responsible for ensuring the serological diagnosis of these pathologies. Samples from suspected cases are sent to the CPC via the GTC/PEV for testing for the presence of IgM anti-measles and rubella virus using the ELISA technique (Euroimmun diagnostic kits provided by the WHO). During 2023, 1483 samples were received (1413 sera and 70 swabs). Out of 1413 blood samples, 1191 were from Cameroon and 222 from Equatorial Guinea, an activity down approximately 15% compared to 2022. After analysis, 505 samples were positive for IgM anti-rubella virus for Cameroon. An increase in the number of positive cases in 2023 (42.40%) compared to 2022 (39.24%). The distribution and evolution of suspected cases of anti-measles virus IgM in 2023 show that the Far North, Littoral, West and Central regions recorded the highest number of suspected cases. However, the Central and Far North regions had the highest number of positive cases. Of the 222 samples received from Equatorial Guinea, 87 tested positive for anti-measles virus IgM. It should be noted that many health districts entered an epidemic in Cameroon in 2023. The molecular diagnosis of measles was carried out on 74 swabs, including 10 from 2022 and 64 collected in 2023.
